We came through Heathrow Terminal 1 last Friday night, and sure enough there was greater security and a very visible police presence, after the terror scare of the previous week. Our hand luggage was minimal, which made boarding and finding a place in the overhead lockers the easiest I have ever seen on a long-haul flight. Our shoes were examined individually, my laptop was scrutinised thoroughly, and they took away a little tube of toothpaste I had forgotten about.
But. The strangest thing is that once we were through all the extra security, we notice a lady knitting, with steel knitting needles that surely would have failed security, and another lady working on a lovely needlepoint tapestry, using a needle and with a cute little pair of scissors on her lap. I wonder if a Muslim woman would have managed to get a needle and scissors and knitting needles through airport security?
