Fairy Godmother

Saturday night our neighbours, Ian and Caroline Silk, had a few friends over for some fireworks, and we were invited. Rose completely enjoyed being transported back to her childhood with a few sparklers. She also made a batch of treacle toffee, another memory of Guy Fawkes days in 1960s Rhodesia.

Let the show begin

A lucky happenstance after our supper found us right on the beach and very close to where the fireworks were being launched from. Here is a rather fluke shot of the start of the show.

One large bonfire

Bonfire Night in Littlehampton

These Brits must really have hated old Guy Fawkes to remember his sorry end for so long like this! You can see the tiny group of people in front of the huge flames from a bonfire near the beach in Littlehampton this past weekend. It was huge. I imagine that most of West Sussex's health and safety practitioners were on Prozac that night, as the flames licked very close to thousands of wide-eyed people out for the annual fireworks display. Hey, we got to see some start from TV's NEIGHBOURS, on a double decker bus, dressed up as Aladdin, and perhaps we got a glimpse of the actress who played the saucy French resistance woman in 'Allo 'Allo - but maybe not - it was dark.

What goes BOOM in the rain?

Brits don't cancel because of weather - watching a fireworks
display in the rain on the Worthing seafront at the Worthing Festival 2007

Friday night was the big fireworks night of this week's Worthing Festival. Rain almost stopped play, but the show started on time, and the first couple of minutes were great! Then the smoke from the exploding fireworks seemed to mix with low clouds, and soon all we could see was the ocassional colourful flash, and then hear the explosions. What a pity, especially for the Lions Club of Worthing, arrangers of the event. I overheard one of them saying the fireworks cost £7000.
